Congratulations ALL-SAFE team! We have been selected as one of the finalists for the Global Surgical Training Challenge, a collaboration among Nesta Challenges, The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, MIT Solve, Appropedia Foundation, and Intuitive Foundation. Read more about the announcement here.
ALL-SAFE is a global surgery education project designed to train surgeons to become confident and competent in performing all aspects of patient care (pre-, intra-, and post-operative) in the laparoscopic treatment of ectopic pregnancy in a resource-constrained setting.
We have previously designed an online, interactive education module on how to perform a laparoscopic ectopic salpingostomy. Now, we are trying to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) as one of the ways learners can gain feedback on their surgical simulation performances.
This is where we need your help. We are asking medical students at the University of Michigan Medical School and at the University of Florida College of Medicine to create surgical simulation videos to train our AI algorithm.
As a participant in this research study, we ask you to complete the following steps at your medical school’s sim center:
You will be compensated via Amazon gift card $10 for uploading your first video and $25 for uploading your second video
Informed Consent:This research poses no more than minimal risk to you. Potential direct benefit is gaining laparoscopic skills.
Your participation is voluntary and has nothing to do with your clerkship or other medical school grades.
All data will be de-identified during analysis, meaning that it cannot be linked to you as an individual. Only members of the study team will know who participated or who provided which content.
By proceeding, you are agreeing to have the de-identified content you provide analyzed and potentially published for publicity, research, and/or future learning. If you have any questions, please ask Yoonhee Ryder (yryder@med.umich.edu).
This study falls under the Michigan IRB number HUM00199557.
This study is in collaboration with the Pan-African Academy of Christian Surgeons (PAACS), the College of Surgeons in East, Central, and Southern Africa (COSECSA), the University of Michigan, Southern Illinois University, Soddo Christian Hospital, Mbingo Baptist Hospital, and Kijabe Hospital. Funding for this study has been provided by the Global Surgical Training Challenge.
STEP 1: INTAKE SURVEYFill out our Demographic Survey below.
Watch the following videos:
Checklist
Familiarize yourself with the checklist. This details how your video will be graded by the AI and will make sure you do not skip any steps!
Ectopic modules may be provided for you at your site. However, if not, please make your own using the resources provided and the PDF instructions HERE. You will need at a minimum two models.
Record yourself performing the surgery in our box simulator for the first time without any practice. There should be someone there to assist you in recording this video. Use the box trainer provided in the sim lab. However if not, HERE are some instructions on how to set up the recording.
Once you have recorded your video, upload it to our Dropbox folder Label your file YOUR EMAIL_PRE.
Practice the operation as much as you would like to, but at a minimum about 10 minutes.
STEP 6: RECORD POST-PRACTICE VIDEORecord yourself performing the surgery in our box simulator after practicing. There should be someone there to assist you in recording this video. Use the box trainer provided in the sim lab. Once you have recorded your video, upload it to our Dropbox folder. Label the file YOUR EMAIL_POST.
You have now completed the project. You will receive your amazon gift card to the email you specified in the intake survey shortly. If you have any questions or would like to get involved further with this project, please contact yryder@med.umich.edu.
We appreciate you!
